Searching for Media Content on Informit
Explore Media is fully integrated into the Informit Explore platform, meaning video content can be discovered using the same familiar search tools used for articles and other text-based resources.
Whether you are planning a lesson, building a favourites playlist for students, or searching for a specific program, Explore Media supports both broad discovery and precise searching.
Browsing media collections and featured content
Explore Media also supports browsing, which is particularly useful if you are exploring a topic or looking for inspiration rather than a specific program.
From the Media landing page, you can access curated spotlight collections, featured programs, and themed groupings aligned to curriculum areas and current events. Spotlight pages highlight curriculum-aligned themes and bring together related videos in one place, making them ideal for lesson planning or inquiry-based learning.
All Explore subject and topic pages now include related media content alongside articles. If you are already working within a topic, you can scroll to the featured videos tab to find videos that have been specifically mapped to that subject or topic.
Searching from the Explore homepage
The simplest way to find media content is to start with the main search bar on the Explore homepage. Enter a keyword, topic, person, event, or place, just as you would when searching for articles.
Once your results appear, you can refine them by selecting “Media” from the content type filters. This immediately narrows your results to video programs available through Explore Media, helping you focus on audio-visual resources without needing to run a separate search.
Using filters to refine your results
Once you are viewing media results, filters allow you to narrow your search further and quickly locate appropriate content.
You can filter by:
- Publication time
- Genre (e.g. ‘News and Current Affairs’)
- Publisher (e.g. ‘ABC’)
For students, results are automatically filtered based on your school’s age-appropriateness settings. Teachers and other admin users can view the full catalogue when logged in individually.
Using keywords effectively
Because Explore Media programs are indexed by expert cataloguers, searching with clear, specific keywords often produces strong results. Using proper nouns (such as names of people, places, or events) can be particularly effective.
If your initial search returns too many results, try adding an additional keyword in the Advanced Search or using quotation marks to search for an exact phrase.
Accessing media from item pages
When viewing an individual media item, you’ll see detailed metadata including a description, broadcast information, and subject tags. From the item page, you can share the video directly with students by creating an Access Link or linking to it from your LMS.
