What is Explore Media? Explore Media is a video streaming add-on to Explore that provides access to millions of records from Australian broadcast networks and curates them for schools.
All video programs are carefully selected and indexed by Informit’s expert cataloguers and sits alongside Informit’s textual content. With an archive dating back to 2007, daily updates and ongoing curation, Explore Media is the comprehensive streaming resource designed for secondary students and teachers.
Explore Media collates educational video content from both free-to-air and PayTV broadcasts in Australia. With programs sourced from well-known global channels like Al Jazeera, The History Channel, BBC Knowledge, and Discovery, schools can access a diverse selection of learning materials in subjects ranging from Media and History to Indigenous Studies and more. Also included is TVNews—a comprehensive archive of more than 15 years of Australia’s news and current affairs programs—with content from all major networks, including ABC, SBS, Nine, Ten and Sky.
When was Explore Media launched?
Explore Media was launched as a pilot project on October 10th 2024. The pilot will run until April 2025, with a free 3-month trial available for schools until December 13th 2024. After this date, schools can opt or a 1-month trial and those who have already trialed can access the product at their school for a heavily discounted rate.
In April 2025, we anticipate a full launch of Explore Media for schools with significance enhancements to the user experience.
The pilot provides access all media content, including TVNews content, however, schools can opt to purchase either Explore Media with or without TVNews.
How does Explore Media work?
Explore Media is available as an add-on to Informit’s existing Explore database, which already offers access to a rich collection of textual content. Explore Media extends your search experience by integrating media collections into the platform and aligning video content with Explore’s subject and topic categories.
Importantly, all schools must have a Screenrights license to use Explore Media.
While TVNews is integrated into the pilot license, schools can choose to purchase Explore Media with or without TVNew. The following options are available to purchase:
Explore Media Complete: Includes all video content, including news and current affairs.
Explore Media Basic: Includes all video content except for the news and current affairs programs included in TVNews.
TVNews: Provides access to news and current affairs programs. Does not include the Explore Media interface.
Who is Explore Media suitable for?
Explore Media is built with both students and teachers in mind. While teachers enjoy unrestricted access, student access is automatically filtered to display content rated PG and below, ensuring age-appropriate learning. Future updates will allow for further refinement of student access.
